Before You Move — Planning Checklist
A successful move to Belize starts with thorough planning. Most experienced expats recommend at least one reconnaissance trip of 2–4 weeks to explore different areas before committing to a move.
- Visit first: spend 2–4 weeks exploring Ambergris Caye, Cayo, Placencia, and Corozal to find your fit
- Join expat groups: 'Belize Expats' on Facebook (30,000+ members) is the most active community for real-time advice
- Budget planning: calculate your monthly costs for your target area — mainland ($1,500–$2,000) vs. islands ($2,000–$3,500)
- Health insurance: arrange international coverage before departure — plans are cheaper when purchased pre-move
- Banking: keep your home country bank accounts — many expats use Wise or Payoneer alongside a Belizean account
- Legal documents: apostille your birth certificate, marriage certificate, and police clearance — needed for QRP and residency applications
- Driver's license: your home country license is valid for 90 days; after that, obtain a Belizean license
- Pet import: dogs and cats need a veterinary health certificate and rabies vaccination — no quarantine required
