Public Healthcare System
Belize has a network of public hospitals and health centers across the country, funded by the government and available to all residents. However, facilities are often underfunded, understaffed, and lacking modern equipment — especially outside Belize City.
- Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City is the country's main public referral hospital — the largest and best-equipped facility
- Western Regional Hospital in Belmopan and Northern Regional Hospital in Orange Walk handle regional cases
- San Pedro PolyClinic (Dr. Otto Rodriguez) on Ambergris Caye provides basic care and emergencies on the island
- Public healthcare is free or heavily subsidized for Belizean residents — expats can access services by paying out-of-pocket
- Rural health posts provide basic primary care in villages — staffed by nurses and visiting doctors
- Wait times can be long in public facilities — several hours for non-emergency cases is common
- Equipment and supply shortages are frequent — especially for diagnostic imaging and specialized tests
