Technically, working on a tourist permit is not authorized. However, many digital nomads work remotely for overseas clients while on tourist extensions - it's widely practiced and rarely enforced. The QRP is the proper legal route for long-term remote work, or you can apply for permanent residency after 12 months.

The QRP is a retirement visa for those 40+ with $2,000/month foreign income - it provides tax exemptions and duty-free imports but doesn't allow local employment. Permanent residency (available after 12 months of continuous stay at any age) allows you to work locally but doesn't include tax exemptions. Many expats start with QRP and later apply for permanent residency or citizenship.

The QRP application typically takes 2–3 months to process through the Belize Tourism Board. You'll need a police clearance from your home country, a medical exam, proof of $2,000/month income, passport photos, and a birth certificate. Some applicants report faster processing (6–8 weeks) with complete documentation.

Yes. Your spouse and children under 18 can be included as dependents on your QRP application. Dependents receive the same benefits including tax exemptions and duty-free imports. Your dependents are also entitled to apply for work permits while living in Belize under the QRP.

Belize does not currently have a dedicated digital nomad visa like Barbados or Costa Rica. The most common routes for remote workers are: monthly tourist extensions ($25/month), the QRP if you're 40+ with qualifying income, or applying for permanent residency after 12 months of continuous living in the country.

The QRP itself does not directly lead to citizenship. However, after living in Belize on any legal status for 5+ years, you can apply for citizenship. Many QRP holders transition to permanent residency and then citizenship. Belize allows dual citizenship, so you don't need to renounce your original nationality.
