Public School System
Belize's public education is based on the British model and conducted in English. Schools are managed by the government in partnership with churches (Catholic, Methodist, Anglican), which run many public schools.
- Primary school: ages 5–13 (8 years); free tuition at government and government-aided schools
- Secondary school: ages 13–17 (4 years); tuition fees of $50–$300 BZD per term at government-aided schools
- Language of instruction: English — a significant advantage for expat children from Anglophone countries
- Church-managed schools: Catholic and other denominations run many of the best public schools — open to all faiths
- Curriculum: based on the Belizean national curriculum with British influences; Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) exams at secondary level
- Class sizes: 25–35 students in urban areas; smaller in rural schools
- Quality varies significantly: urban schools in Belize City and Belmopan generally perform better than rural schools
