Both work, depending on your priorities. Bansko is genuinely excellent year-round: winters for skiing, summers for mountain hiking, spring/autumn for quiet and cheap living. Sofia is better year-round than Bansko for families and those needing full urban infrastructure. Many nomads do a Sofia base + Bansko escapes model - spending 2–3 months in Bansko for ski season and returning to Sofia for the rest of the year.

Bulgaria's unique advantage is the combination of EU membership, Schengen travel, euro currency, and the lowest taxes in the EU (10%/10%). Montenegro has lower costs but isn't EU. Albania has even cheaper costs but isn't EU and has a higher learning curve. Serbia has a great nomad scene and good taxes (10%) but isn't EU. Bulgaria gives you all the EU protections and travel rights at Balkan prices - a combination no other country in the region can match.

Plovdiv is Bulgaria's second city and often preferred by expats who find Sofia too big or too urban. The UNESCO Old Town and Kapana arts district are genuinely beautiful. Rents are cheaper than Sofia. The city has a strong café and arts culture and a Slow Travel vibe. The downsides: fewer international schools, smaller coworking scene, and a slightly smaller expat community. It's an excellent base for those who want charm and authenticity over full urban infrastructure.

September–October (autumn) is often cited as the best time: warm (20–25°C in Sofia), uncrowded, affordable accommodation, Plovdiv's Apollonia Arts Festival, wine harvest tours in Thracian Valley, and the Pirin Mountains at their most colourful. May–June is also excellent. January–February is perfect if skiing in Bansko is the draw. Avoid late July–August in Sofia (35°C, dry heat) as a first introduction - though August is ideal for the Black Sea coast.

Yes - and it's one of Bulgaria's best lifestyle advantages. The Greek border at Kulata is 1 hour from Bansko and 2.5 hours from Sofia. Thessaloniki (Greece's second city) is 2.5 hours from Sofia. The Greek Aegean coast is 3–4 hours from Bansko. As a Schengen member, there are no border controls between Bulgaria and Greece. Kavala, Xanthi, and Thessaloniki are realistic day trips from Bansko. Many Bulgaria-based expats do 'Greek weekend escapes' regularly.
