For EU citizens: yes, absolutely - you can move anywhere in Bulgaria immediately. For non-EU nationals: the Type D visa application must happen at your Bulgarian embassy abroad before you travel. Once you arrive on the Type D visa, you apply for the residence permit at the Migration Directorate in Sofia - even if you plan to live in Bansko. After receiving the permit, you can live in Bansko (re-register your address if moving after initial registration).

Fairly straightforward with a residence permit and Bulgarian TIN. UniCredit Bulbank and DSK Bank are the most expat-friendly; English-language service is available. Without a residence permit (in the early weeks), account opening is harder - some banks require a permit. This is one reason many expats use Wise or Revolut for the first few months. For the EOOD company structure, a dedicated business account is also required (same banks can provide it).

Yes - the E80/A1 motorway corridor from Vienna through Serbia (Belgrade) to Sofia is an established route, approximately 1,300 km or 12–14 hours drive. The road quality is good on the motorway sections. With Bulgaria's Schengen accession in 2025, there are no passport checks at Bulgarian borders with Romania and the rest of Schengen. The drive through Serbia still involves a brief border formality. Many expats drive to Sofia for the flexibility it provides.

Bulgaria is an EU country with standard European public health standards. No special vaccinations are required beyond your standard Western vaccination schedule. The ECDC recommends ensuring you are up to date on MMR, DTP, Hepatitis A (particularly if you'll spend time in rural areas), and seasonal flu. Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) vaccination is worth considering if you'll be hiking or spending time in forested areas - particularly relevant for Bansko and mountain regions.
