The Taiwan Employment Gold Card is a combined open-work permit + ARC (residency) + re-entry permit + NHI eligibility - all in one card. It's issued to skilled professionals earning $50,000+/year or with recognized expertise in fields including finance, technology, arts, and sports. Apply entirely online at goldcard.nat.gov.tw with your passport, income proof (tax returns, employment letter), and a $225 fee. Processing takes about 30 days. It's one of the world's most straightforward professional visa applications.

Gold Card: higher income threshold ($50K/year), 1–3 year duration, open work authorization, NHI eligible, tax benefits on foreign income. Digital Nomad Visitor Visa: lower income ($20–40K/year depending on age), only 6 months, not renewable, NHI not included. For serious long-term Taiwan expats, the Gold Card is far superior. The DN Visitor Visa is primarily for shorter-term stays or those who don't yet meet Gold Card income thresholds.

Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most developed countries can enter Taiwan visa-free for 90 days - no application needed. Just show up at Taoyuan Airport with a valid passport and return ticket. For stays beyond 90 days, you need the Gold Card, Digital Nomad Visa, or another ARC category.

The Employment Gold Card combines a 3-year work permit, Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), and multiple-entry visa into one card. To qualify: monthly salary of at least NTD $160,000 (about $5,000 USD) OR outstanding achievement in technology, economics, culture, arts, sports, or education. Application fee: $55 USD, processing time 30–60 days. Benefits include a 50% income tax exemption for the first 3 years and an expedited path to permanent residency.

The Entrepreneur Visa is for those starting a business in Taiwan. Requirements: NTD 500,000 ($15,700) investment, a registered company in Taiwan, and a viable business plan reviewed by the National Development Council. Grants a 1-year ARC renewable as long as the business is operational. Taiwan Startup Terrace and several government accelerators provide support and mentorship for foreign entrepreneurs.
