National Health Insurance (NHI) — How It Works
Taiwan's NHI is one of the world's most comprehensive single-payer healthcare systems. It covers virtually all medical services — outpatient, inpatient, surgery, dental, mental health, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
- Eligibility: foreigners who have lived in Taiwan legally for 6 consecutive months; Gold Card holders immediately eligible
- Enrollment: mandatory after 6 months of legal residency — fines apply for failure to enroll
- Monthly premium: typically NT$1,000–$1,500 (~$32–$48) for self-employed/freelancers; employers share cost for employees
- GP visit co-pay: NT$150 (~$5) at clinics; NT$200–450 at hospital outpatient departments
- Specialist consultation with NHI: NT$240–$480 including referral letter
- Inpatient care: covered; co-pay applies for choice of room type
- Dental: basic services covered (cleaning, fillings, extractions); cosmetic excluded
- Prescription drugs: covered at NHI pharmacies for a small co-pay
- Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): covered including acupuncture, herbal medicine
- Mental health: outpatient psychiatric covered; therapy sessions subsidized
