Yes - it is genuinely extraordinary. Rwanda banned plastic bags in 2008 (the first African country to do so), and Kigali's streets are visibly cleaner than most European cities. Monthly Umuganda community service days see the entire city participate in collective cleaning and maintenance. Street sweepers work daily, littering is socially unacceptable, and the government enforces cleanliness standards actively. First-time visitors consistently describe Kigali's cleanliness as their most surprising observation.

Umuganda is a mandatory community service day held on the last Saturday of every month, typically from 8am to 11am. During Umuganda, businesses close, public transport stops, and citizens participate in community activities - cleanup, construction, gardening, or neighbourhood meetings. As an expat, you are encouraged to participate (it is an excellent cultural experience) but are not legally required to. Plan to stay home or at your accommodation during these hours - moving around the city is difficult.

Exceptional and growing rapidly. Rwanda produces some of Africa's finest arabica coffee - Bourbon variety beans grown on volcanic soil at 1,500–2,000m altitude, producing bright, fruity, and complex flavours. Kigali has an excellent specialty coffee scene: Question Coffee (which also supports women's cooperatives), Inzora Rooftop, Café Neo, and Shokola are standout venues. Visiting a coffee washing station in the countryside is a memorable day trip.

Kigali is widely considered one of the safest cities in Africa for women. Rwanda has the world's highest percentage of women in parliament (over 60%), and gender-based violence is taken seriously legally and culturally. Walking alone during the day is perfectly normal, and evenings in main areas feel safe. Standard global precautions apply - avoid poorly lit isolated areas at night - but the overall safety environment is excellent compared to almost any other African capital.

Volcanoes National Park is based in Musanze, approximately 2.5 hours by car from Kigali on an excellent tarmac road. You can hire a private driver ($80–120 return), join an organised tour, or take a public bus to Musanze ($5, 3 hours) and arrange local transport. Most visitors spend at least one night in Musanze - hotels range from $50 budget guesthouses to $1,500+/night luxury lodges like Bisate Lodge and Virunga Lodge. Gorilla permits ($1,500) must be booked well in advance through the Rwanda Development Board.
