Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Rwanda is one of only three countries in the world where you can trek to see endangered mountain gorillas in the wild — and Volcanoes National Park offers the most accessible and well-organised gorilla trekking experience.
- Volcanoes National Park (Musanze): home to roughly one-third of the world's ~1,063 mountain gorillas
- Gorilla trekking permits: $1,500 per person — must be booked in advance through RDB
- Trek duration: 1–4 hours through bamboo forest to reach a gorilla family; 1 hour with the gorillas
- Treks depart from Kinigi (20 min from Musanze, 2.5 hrs from Kigali)
- Best seasons: dry months (June–September, December–February) for easier trekking conditions
- Widely considered the most transformative wildlife experience in the world
- Golden monkey tracking also available in the same park — $100/permit
- Accommodation ranges from $50 guesthouses in Musanze to $1,500+/night luxury lodges (Bisate, Virunga Lodge)
