Education Landscape in Laos
Education in Laos is a mixed picture. The public school system teaches in Lao and is not suitable for most expat children. Vientiane has several established international schools offering English-medium education to a decent standard, though the range and quality doesn't compare to Bangkok, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. Luang Prabang has very limited options. Many expat families with school-age children choose Vientiane specifically for its international school cluster.
- International schools: concentrated in Vientiane โ 5โ8 established schools
- Curricula: British (most common), American, French, and International Baccalaureate (IB)
- Class sizes: typically small (10โ20 students) โ more individual attention than large Asian hubs
- Language of instruction: English at most international schools; French at Lycรฉe Josuรฉ Hoffet
- Public schools: Lao language instruction, not recommended for non-Lao-speaking expat children
- Homeschooling: increasingly popular among expat families โ online curricula and co-ops exist
