Argentina's Digital Nomad Visa (launched 2024) grants legal 12-month residence for remote workers employed by or freelancing for companies outside Argentina. Requirements: valid passport (6+ months), proof of remote income of approximately $2,000–$2,500/month (bank statements, employment contracts, client invoices), international health insurance covering Argentina, and a police clearance certificate from your home country. Apply through the National Migration Directorate (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones) in Argentina, or at an Argentine consulate abroad. After 12 months, it's renewable for a further 12 months, then convertible to temporary residence on the path to permanent residency.

Dramatically. Before Milei, the 'blue dollar' (unofficial exchange rate) paid nearly 100% more than the official rate, meaning expats had to navigate informal cambio houses with cash dollars. After Milei's April 2025 capital control reforms, the parallel market premium has collapsed to just 2–3% - you can now simply use your foreign Visa or Mastercard and get a near-market rate automatically. Inflation fell from 211% (2023) to 31.8% (2025) and is projected at ~20% for 2026. The result: Argentina is a vastly more straightforward financial environment for expats than it was 2–3 years ago.

Technically no - tourist entry is 90 days within a 180-day period. In practice, many people extend by doing a border run (ferry to Uruguay, ~$30–$50 USD, same-day return), which resets the 90-day clock. This is widely tolerated but legally not a long-term strategy - immigration authorities can deny re-entry if they believe you're living in Argentina without a proper visa. At minimum 2 years of continuous legal residence - but the 2025 Milei decree means any departure from Argentina resets the 2-year clock. So if you leave for a vacation or emergency, your 2-year count restarts from zero. This is a significant change from the previous rules and is the most important factor for anyone planning a PR timeline. In practice: arrive on Digital Nomad Visa or Rentista, stay continuously for 2 years without leaving, then apply for permanent residency. Citizenship follows after 2 more continuous years. Total minimum from first arrival to citizenship: approximately 5–6 years without any international travel.

For Digital Nomad Visa holders, income deposited into a non-Argentine bank account from overseas clients or employers is not subject to Argentine income tax. If you become an Argentine tax resident (183+ days/year) and earn Argentine-source income, standard progressive rates apply (5–35%). Most digital nomads operating through foreign accounts fall outside Argentina's practical tax enforcement for foreign-source income. For freelancers billing Argentine clients, you must register as a Monotributista (self-employed) and pay Argentina's Monotributo - which includes a social contribution and income tax in one simplified monthly payment (as low as $1.40/month for the lowest category).
