Friday brunch is the cornerstone of UAE expat social life. Hotels across Dubai and Abu Dhabi host 2–4 hour all-inclusive food and beverage packages every Friday from 12–4pm. Prices range from AED 150 ($41) for basic spreads to AED 500+ ($136+) at premium hotels like Atlantis, Four Seasons, or Jumeirah. Food is usually outstanding - multiple stations, live cooking, international cuisines. House beverages (prosecco, beer, soft drinks) are typically included. Brunch is where the expat week begins: expect a lively, international, well-dressed crowd.

In Dubai, you can legally purchase alcohol from licensed liquor stores (MMI - Maritime & Mercantile International, African + Eastern) with a personal liquor licence - though enforcement of the licence requirement has been relaxed, and delivery services via apps are widely used. In Abu Dhabi, alcohol can be purchased from licensed stores. In Sharjah, alcohol is completely prohibited. You can freely consume alcohol purchased from licensed stores in your private home throughout Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The UAE's geography and air connectivity make it a superb travel base. Popular holiday destinations from Dubai include Bali (6h), the Maldives (4h), Sri Lanka (4h), Georgia (3h), Seychelles (5h), and Europe (6–8h). January and February are peak travel months when expats escape the mild-but-samey UAE winter for beach destinations. Many expats travel 6–8 times per year - the UAE work culture, while demanding, typically provides 30 days annual leave, enabling several substantial trips.

Excellent. The UAE is genuinely family-oriented in its design: malls have extensive play areas, theme parks are world-class (Ferrari World, Legoland, Warner Bros.), beaches are safe and clean, and the safety record is exceptional. Young children thrive here. The main practical challenges are the summer heat (June–September is largely indoor) and school fees (significant cost, but offset by tax-free salary). Most family expats rate the UAE experience as outstanding - particularly for 3–10 year olds who have access to activities that would be luxury experiences in their home countries.

Beyond the Burj Khalifa and desert safaris: Hatta Mountain Reserve for hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking on an emerald-green dam lake. The Dibba coast in Fujairah for snorkelling and diving on pristine reefs. Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi emirate - the UAE's most dramatic dunes, largely tourist-free. Al Ain UNESCO World Heritage oasis city - completely different vibe from Dubai. Sir Bani Yas Island (Abu Dhabi) - wildlife reserve with Arabian oryx and giraffes. The old Bastakiya quarter (Al Fahidi) in Dubai - preserved wind-tower architecture and the finest museums in the city.
