Healthcare System Overview
Myanmar's healthcare infrastructure has been severely impacted by decades of underinvestment and the post-2021 political crisis. The public healthcare system is stretched thin, with limited equipment, medication shortages, and overwhelmed staff. Private hospitals in Yangon provide a higher standard of care but still lack the facilities and expertise for complex procedures. The universal recommendation for expats is comprehensive international health insurance with medical evacuation coverage — Bangkok is the standard evacuation destination, just 2 hours by air.
- Public healthcare: technically free or very low cost, but severely under-resourced since 2021
- Private healthcare: better quality but still below international standards for complex cases
- Medical evacuation: standard protocol for serious illness/injury — Bangkok hospitals are the primary destination
- Medication: basic drugs available at pharmacies; specialized medications may need to be imported or sourced from Bangkok
- Mental health services: extremely limited — few English-speaking therapists in Myanmar
- Dental care: basic services available in Yangon private clinics at very low cost ($20–$50 for routine procedures)
