Erbil offers more than you'd expect: explore the ancient citadel and bazaar, enjoy Ankawa's restaurants and bars, visit modern malls, or take a day trip to the Kurdish mountains (Shaqlawa is 1 hour away). In winter, the weather is perfect for outdoor exploration.

In Erbil's Ankawa neighborhood, yes - there are bars, restaurants with live music, and a relaxed social scene. Baghdad has some hotel bars and private social clubs. Outside these areas, nightlife as Westerners know it is virtually nonexistent.

Domestic flights connect Baghdad, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Basra. Shared taxis are cheap and frequent between Kurdish cities. Travel between Kurdistan and federal Iraq requires crossing internal checkpoints. Security conditions vary by region - check travel advisories before road trips to southern Iraq.

Kurdistan is the outdoor highlight - hiking in the mountains, visiting waterfalls (Gali Ali Beg, Bekhal), swimming in Dukan Lake, and exploring ancient monasteries. Southern Iraq offers the unique Mesopotamian marshlands for boat tours. Baghdad's options are more limited but include Tigris river walks and park visits.

Air conditioning is non-negotiable from May to October. Most socializing and activities shift to evenings and nighttime during summer. Many expats take extended summer vacations abroad (July–August), and indoor malls, cinemas, and restaurants become primary daytime destinations.
