Hungary’s immigration system offers clear pathways for different expat profiles. EU/EEA citizens have automatic right of residence. Non-EU citizens can choose from the White Card (digital nomad visa), employment-based work permits, the EU Blue Card, guest self-employment permits, or the Golden Visa investment route.
- EU/EEA citizens: automatic right to live and work — register at local government office within 90 days
- White Card (Digital Nomad Visa): 1 year for remote workers earning €3,000+/month net from foreign sources; renewable once
- Work Permit: requires Hungarian employer sponsorship; job-specific, 1-year duration
- EU Blue Card: for highly qualified professionals — 1.5× national average salary; up to 4 years
- Guest Self-Employment: for freelancers/contractors — 1 year, extendable to 3 years
- Golden Visa: €250,000 real estate fund investment or €1M donation — 10-year residence permit
