Work Visa & Iqama (Residence Permit)
The work visa is the most common pathway for expats. Your Saudi employer sponsors your visa and handles the application through the Ministry of Human Resources. Upon arrival, you complete a medical exam and biometrics to receive your Iqama (residence permit), which is your primary ID for banking, housing, and daily life.
- Employer submits application to Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD)
- Medical test required: HIV, hepatitis, TB screening at approved Saudi health centres
- Iqama issued after visa stamping — mandatory for banking, renting, driving, and SIM cards
- Duration: 1–2 years, renewable by employer; tied to employment contract
- 2025 skill-based classification: High-Skilled (SAR 15,000+ salary, degree + 5 years), Skilled (SAR 7,000–14,999), Basic (SAR 3,000–6,999)
- Dependent visa allows sponsorship of spouse and children — minimum salary typically SAR 10,000/month
- Exit/re-entry visa reforms: expats can now obtain exit/re-entry independently via Absher app
