Bolivia's immigration system is simpler than most South American countries. The primary pathway for expats is the Specific Purpose Visa, obtained from a Bolivian consulate before entry, which serves as the gateway to all residency categories. The Specific Purpose Visa is the single entry point for all residency applications in Bolivia. You must obtain this visa from a Bolivian consulate in your home country before entering Bolivia. Once you enter Bolivia on your Specific Purpose Visa, you file for temporary residency at the Dirección General de Migración in La Paz, Santa Cruz, or Cochabamba. The permit is valid for 1 year and renewable. After 2 continuous years, you become eligible for permanent residency. Bolivia offers several residency categories depending on your situation.
